What skills will my child be learning in this class?

Responsibility: A strong emphasis is placed on personal responsibilities of the students in this class. The children no longer have to use markers or crayons from a large communal basket or wait for something to become available that they want to use. When each child has a box of their own supplies, this allows the children to feel pride and ownership. They learn the responsibility of putting the contents back into the box and placing it in a secure place when it is not in use.

Organization: This a very important skill for children to learn early on in their education. During the course of a week, students will be responsible for keeping their work area clean. Also the children will devote some time to self monitored center activities. We also have a Child of the Day and classroom helpers, to help keep our classroom clean!  The children quickly learn that when they focus and work hard, there is often additional playtime and activities for them to enjoy!

Independence: Children love to be independent and they want to succeed. In this class your child will have many opportunities show independence and maturity. Your child will learn many self-reliance skills; from zipping up coats to full snow apparel, and from hygiene to table manners. In addition, your child will get many opportunities to explore their academic interests;  from free choice time to the listening center, from social friendships to academic growth. Students are encouraged to be their own person; to discover what they love to do, do it, and take ownership in the finished product. Trusting the students from the first day of school lays this important foundation. The rest is direction and encouragement.
