Order:
Though the activities we use may change slightly from day to day,
the overall routine does not. Additionally, we maintain "a
place for everything and everything in its place" quite simply
with color-coded containers. Since children at this age are constantly
categorizing and seeking patterns to better understand their world,
the measures we take provide the students with a sense of calm.
Coordination:
The children are free to return to work on activities as frequently
as they would like. Since they know that they will not be rushed
to finish and that they can return to practice anytime they would
like, the opportunities for large and small motor development are
plentiful.
Concentration:
The
fact that the children are free to choose and return to favorite
activities allows them to spend time attending to details of their
work. This, along with the calm classroom atmosphere, allows for
effortless concentration and the development of creative thought
patterns.
Independence:
Only through accomplishments which are self-motivated do we gain
the joy of learning! This is why the children's choice time is self-directed.
There are times when children wish to challenge themselves, and
there are times when they prefer to return to favorite activities
they have previously mastered. By having both basic and more complex
activities available on the shelves at all times, the children can
derive self-confidence from either type!
